The free versions use the same scanning engine of the pro versions so you get great real time protection and great performance. Real time protection means they are always actively working in the background to protect your computer. They all have daily deep scan scheduling,daily automatic update features,active spyware features,email scanning,and link scanning.
If you go to the CNET download site you will see that they have all been downloaded millions of times and have great editor and user reviews and high ratings. I have been using AVG for years now and recently switched to Avira,but again switched back because of annoying commercial pop-ups. AVG has never let me down.
Another free malware protection product worth mentioning Malwarebytes. This newer product is a rising star with good overall performance. The only reason I do not recommend it is because it has no real time features and has to be run manually. This is a big draw back so I would not use it except for emergencies on a rescue CD.

Your only recourse is to scan and remove the malware with a rescue CD. Also some malware will corrupt the operating system that the computer might fail to start-up. Again a rescue CD can be used sometimes to restore your computer back to an operational state. Avira and AVG both have free rescue CD’s that can be downloaded as IOS file images so that you can burn and create this valuable tool.
